Warren Street Hotel
For those of you who are just joining this week, welcome!! A little context: I, Sara Regnier, will guide you through the history, the lore, and the drama behind various buildings in NYC that may or may not mean something special to me. These will be neither factually nor grammatically sound, but dammit they will be fun (and will have a liberal amount of parentheses interjections)!
YUCK! I hate long intros to things, so let's get started! This week's building is - drumroll, please! *drumrolls* *airhorns for good measure* - Warren Street Hotel!
This was my attempt at a subtle selfie in public because I'm way too self conscious to do anything more.
I mean!!!! Look at her (the building, not me)!!! I was walking back home from escaping jury duty (classic) when my eyes were blessed with this sea of turquoise amongst a rather brown and grey sea of buildings. I knew that she just simply had to be this week's subject. This 11-story boutique hotel is located in Tribeca (like the absolute bottom of Tribeca tbh it's basically Fidi but more expensive) and is only a block away from my Whole Foods and Target!
Located on 86 Warren Street, Warren Street Hotel (creatively named) features 57 individually designed bedrooms & suites along with 12 exclusive residences! Call me Zack and Cody 'cause I'm trying to live the suite life here! The outside of the hotel was designed by Paul Taylor (with his architect/ interior design firm, Stonehill Taylor) who freaking LOVES designing hotels. Some of the firm's work includes Moxy NYC Chelsea (I've only been to the one in downtown nyc, but this looks just as cool), The Radio Tower Hotel, and The Ned NoMad. Please go check those out because they are so cool. I'm a big fan of the huge variety in style and how they aren't afraid to be very bold with color (every new development in nyc is SO fucking boring, so these were very refreshing to see).
This building is also rocking with the 150-seat Warren Bar and Restaurant, a drawing room, an orangery (hello? what is that?), and a private event space. The hotel is operated by Firmdale Hotels which has locations in London & NYC. These hotels freaking rock due to the creative force that is Kit Kemp, who (in all honesty) slays the house down. Her style is cheerful maximalist, combining textures & patterns to create a space that sparks the absolute best energy. It's hard to pull off maximalism without looking too chaotic and, in my humble opinion, Kit does so flawlessly.
Fun Facts
I'm basically a Kit Kemp fan girl at this point (crossing my fingers that she's not super problematic (you never know with the British)), and her website is chef's kiss. She has a section called "sleeping around" which showcases different hotel bedrooms she's designed and what inspired them. Like? Not her being a comedic queen? I love her so much (even though she's British).
I walk by this area all the time on account of my undying servitude to Target, so I was stunned when I finally noticed this glorious building. I thought "Have I officially lost it? Am I that disassociated when I'm outside?". Worry not, friends! I am indeed as perceptive as I originally thought. The facade was only recently erected (hehe) & this is what it looked like only a few months ago in November:
But guys, this hotel JUST opened on February 1st! Super crazy timing on my part. I'm absolutely locked in to the universe or something.
This lot used to be a parking structure, but in summer 2019 (take me back (tbh not really tho)) a permit was filed to start building this beauty here. Five years later, some girl with a silly fake newsletter will walk by and go "omg, that's so cute!" and write a whole fuckin thing about it.
Okay that's all for this week, pals. This installment wasn't as juicy as the others due to it just opening up, but I hope you still found this interesting. I still don't know what an orangery technically is or how there is one inside this hotel, but maybe that's just not for me to know. Above are some building plans for all you architecture buffs out there cough dylan cough christina cough frank. I promise not to miss next week's installment!! Until then, much love!
xoxo Sara
