St. Patrick's Cathedral
Hello and welcome to "building of the week", presented to you by Sara Regs Inc.! These will neither be consistent nor factually accurate, but they will be fun! This week's building is: St. Patrick's Cathedral! St. Patrick’s Cathedral is the largest Catholic Gothic cathedral in North America, home of the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of New York and parish church. People (idk who) claim this building to be one of the greatest American Gothic churches. Sure, I guess!
In 1810 the Jesuits bought for $11,000 the site with the intention of building a school for young Catholics. Whoops! The project was not built and in 1813 the land was sold again to some guy named Dom Augustin Lestrange abbot. He was something called a "Trappist" (so maybe he likes to DJ?). Apparently the Trappist community was fleeing French authorities (ok criminals?) in the U.S. during Napoleon's reign. They created a monastery (of monks who like crime) but went back to France once Napoleon's reign kicked the bucket in 1814.
Now that you know that stupid history lesson, the property was bounced around a few owners and in 1850 Archbishop John Joseph Hughes (jingleheimer smith?) announced that St. Patrick was going to be erect! cough Excuse me, that the cathedral was going to be erected. A few world wars and a butt load of tax evasion later, we now have what we know and love as St. Patrick's Cathedral!
Fun Facts!
It has more than 2,800 stained glass panels. Woah!
We've got 103 windows but only 19 bells. Do with that information what you will.
Eight Archbishops of New York are buried in a crypt under the high altar. How goth!
It's named St. Patrick's Cathedral to honor all the Irish immigrants who came to New York! Hell yeah! Fuck the British!
However, be careful when entering the surrounding area. The years and years of Catholic guilt can upset one's stomach, causing you to have to rush to the nearest restroom. May I suggest Gap or perhaps a fancy movie theater nearby? Be sure to pack some Imodium for your next trip.
Be sure to stay tuned for next week's installment!
All my love,
Sara
